The history of the game of golf dates back to the fourteenth century. The game is believed to be first played at Scotland. The first written reference was found at St.Andrew’s in the year 1457. This place was the first proper golf course. The golf clubs, the golf balls and also the rules for playing the game was structured out in Scotland. The origin of the game is weaved with a lot of mysteries. One story says that the fishermen on their way back from fishing would pick up a piece of wood stick and the hit the pebble to see how far it goes. They fishermen would repeatedly do it until the pebble got drowned in the river. In the year 1457, along with soccer, golf to was banned y the Parliament under James the second as the game was said to have interfered with the military training for the wars against English. In the year 1470, the ban on golf was reaffirmed in the parliament under James the third. And in the year 1491, he ban was again put by James the fourth. After the 1502, according to the treaty of Scotland signed in between England and Scotland, the ban was finally lifted up. In the year 1502, James the fourth made the very first recorded purchase of the golf equipments. He bought a set of golf clubs from a bow maker from Perth in Scotland. With the spread of the English people all over he world, the game of golf also spread across the globe. Outside the British Isles, it was the Royal Calcutta Golf Club in India that was built by the British. It wa built in the year 1829.
The early golfers who played the game for so many years, without thinking of forming a society or club. Finally a group from Edinburg comprising of golfers in the year 1744, formed a Club which was known as the honourable Company of the Edinburg golfers. The first rules of the golf were thirteen in number. There was a competition held for the sportsmen who belonged from the Great Britain and Ireland. After a few years, the golfers from St.Andrews formed a society in the year 19834 where king William the fourth became the patron of the society. The title was later transformed to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
